Mitai, Te Pā Tū and Te Puia's Te Pō compared: the welcome, the performance, the meal, length, pickup and price, plus the daytime village visits (Oct 2026).
There is no single best one; there is a best one for what you want from the evening. Mitai: the whole sequence
Mitai Māori Village is family owned and runs its evening in a bush setting on Fairy Springs Road. The visitors choose one of their group as their chief, then the evening moves through the pōwhiri and the wero, a waka paddled down the Wai-o-whiro stream, performances of haka, waiata, mōteatea and poi, the lifting of the hāngī from the earth oven, the buffet, a guided walk past the sacred spring Te Puna Tapu o Tūhoe to see glow worms, and a poroporoaki, the farewell. It suits all ages and runs in any weather. The walk into the forest starts down stairs, so wheelchair users see the waka and the spring but not the glow worms.
Te Pā Tū: the setting and the dinner
Te Pā Tū puts the evening in a forest-formed amphitheatre, with bonfires among the tawa trees. The songs and traditions follow the Maramataka, so the programme changes through the year. Dinner starts with forest canapés and continues with courses by Māori chefs, served outdoors or inside when the weather says so. Pickup is included. The kitchen can do gluten-free and vegetarian meals but cannot cater for every diet, and no cash is taken during the evening.

Te Puia: the evening beside the geysers
Te Puia’s Te Pō evening starts with a 30-minute welcome and performance in its carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua: the pōhiri, waiata, mōteatea, poi and haka. You then walk to Pōhutu Geyser for a hot chocolate, and finish with a hāngī buffet at the Pātaka Kai restaurant, which looks over the geothermal valley. The entrance ticket is included, and the evening is wheelchair accessible if you say so when you book. Te Puia also sells the same evening with a guided tour of the valley added, from US$165, about 4 hours.

By day instead
The evenings are not the only way in. Whakarewarewa, the living Māori village, and Te Puia’s daytime Te Rā tour show you the geothermal ground and the people who live and work on it; Māori village tours compares them.
