Auckland Museum: Living Taonga

Taonga is the Māori word for a treasure, something prized, and the museum’s performance treats Māori culture as a living one. Māori artists and orators lead it, with waiata (songs), poi and storytelling, and explain the origins and meaning of the haka. The ticket includes general admission to the museum and its galleries.

Before you book:

  • Book ahead. Bookings are essential and subject to availability; the performance does not run on Anzac Day, 25 April.
  • Opening hours. The museum opens 10:00 to 17:00 (09:00 to 17:00 in school and public holidays), until 20:30 on Tuesdays, and closes on Christmas Day (Auckland Museum, October 2026). The Māori Court and Pacific galleries are temporarily closed (October 2026), so check what is open before you plan around a gallery.
  • Getting there. It is about a 30-minute walk or a 5-minute drive from the city centre, with car parking on site. Wheelchairs are available on site but cannot be pre-booked.

The drive is the cost of the day: about three hours each way. If you can stay a night in Rotorua, an evening at Mitai, Te Pā Tū or Te Puia gives you the full programme; the Rotorua evenings compared shows how they differ.
