Māori Village Tour in Rotorua
Daytime Māori village tours in Rotorua: Whakarewarewa, the living village, and Te Puia's Te Rā walk with the geysers, kiwi and carving school. Lengths and prices (Oct 2026).
For a Māori village by day, book the guided tour of Whakarewarewa, the living Māori village: about an hour with a village guide among homes where people cook, bathe and heat their houses with geothermal steam, as they have for centuries, rated 4.6 from 399 reviews and from US$26 a person (checked October 2026). Te Puia, in Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, is the other daytime visit: a 90-minute guided walk with the geysers, the kiwi and the national carving and weaving school.

Whakarewarewa, the living Māori village

The guides at Whakarewarewa are direct descendants of the early Māori guides who shaped tourism in New Zealand for generations, and the village is lived in: its families use the natural geothermal resources to cook, to bathe and to heat their homes. On the guided tour you see how daily life works on the geothermal ground, and the admission includes corn on the cob. The tour is outdoors and runs in all weather.
The village’s cultural performance, with songs, haka, poi and stick games, is a separate booking of about 30 minutes, from US$17; what the haka is explains what you will see.
Te Puia: the Te Rā guided walk
Te Puia’s Te Rā guided day tour takes about 90 minutes through Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley: Pōhutu Geyser, the Kiwi Conservation Centre, with kiwi in a nocturnal enclosure, and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where students learn weaving and wood, stone and bone carving. The kaiārahi, Te Puia’s guides, share their own traditions and stories on the way. It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The same walk with the cultural performance in the meeting house, from US$81, takes about 2 hours.
